For half a millenium following European settlement of North America, the idea that pre-Columbian peoples here were few and primitive has been widely accepted and widely used to justify their displacement. During the past fifty years, a number of scholars have argued that in fact, the Americas were relatively densely populated by sophisticated people living in some cases longer and in many ways better than the people of Europe. In this article Charles Mann discusses this research and its conclusions. I found it eye-opening.
